One More Thing
One More Thing
by B.J. Novak
I have never had a lot of success listening to fiction via audiobook, but this is one I am glad to have heard rather than read. B.J. Novak performs his material with other comedic actors like Lena Dunham, Rainn Wilson, Mindy Kaling, and Jenna Fischer. A friend of mine, whose tastes are very similar to mine, recently tried to read a hard copy of this book and abandoned it. As I listened to the stories, I could see how much of Novak's humor depends upon being able to hear it correctly delivered.
I absolutely died listening to this book. Novak is gifted with a very original and unique writing voice. He can also play the part of a pretentious-douchebag-asshole like no one else. His writing has a philosophical slant most of the time, but in a way that Novak doesn't take himself too seriously. His humor definitely falls in the geekomedy genre. My favorite stories were "No one goes to heaven to see Dan Fogelberg," "'Rithmetic," "Julie and the Warlord," and "Sophia." Not every story was amazing, but I enjoyed the vast majority very much.
Based on the contrasting experiences between a trusted fellow bookworm who reads EVERYTHING and found the print copy to be lackluster -- compared to my own experience -- I highly recommend this book if you are going to listen to the audiobook. If you read the hard copy, you are going to miss out on too much. It's like reading a transcript of Saturday Night Live... there will be some humor that makes sense, but it just isn't the same.
