Legend (Legend, #1)
by Marie Lu
After so many dystopian YA series, it takes a lot to impress readers of this genre. That said, this novel exceeded my expectations. This conspiracy-driven novel is set in the American Republic, which has split from "the Colonies." Its citizens are divided between those that can and cannot afford the vaccines for the lethal viruses that the government cannot seem to control. Two incredibly bright teenagers from opposite backgrounds find themselves diametrically opposed... but unexpectedly attracted to each other as well. There's some legitimate and powerful heat in the romantic subplot without being gratuitously graphic.
I am looking forward to continuing this series because the first installment has offered a very promising start. I'm perplexed as to how this 2011 book has not become a movie yet. Some quick googling informed me that the film adaptation rights were sold to CBS in 2013. In my estimation, they are sitting on a gold mine because I would certainly not miss this in theaters.
